Paleo Spicy Mocha- Dairy & Refined Sugar Free

Sharing is caring!

In honor of Cinco de Mayo, I would like to introduce you to… the spicy mocha, also known as the Mexican mocha! If you are a fan of anything with a spicy kick, you have to try this mocha. It is the perfect blend of chocolate, coffee and warming spices. The best part, you don’t have to feel guilty about drinking it!

Chocolate

One of the most important parts of the spicy mocha is the chocolate. I avoid refined sugar as much as I can, so all my recommendations will be chocolate without it, but use whatever chocolate you would like. My whole family loves Wax Orchard’s Oh, Fudge sauce, it is local to me (Seattle area) and it is sweetened with fruit juice (pear and pineapple). There is no refined sugar or dairy. Another option is Four Sigmatic Mushroom Cacao, it is a hot cocoa mix but works great for mochas. It is sweetened with coconut sugar, has no dairy and has 500mg of organic Cordyceps mushroom powder. Four Sigmatic also uses cacao powder instead of cocoa powder, read about why cacao powder is better here.

You could also melt my favorite Hu Kitchen chocolate gems or chocolate bars into your mocha. Hu’s chocolate uses organic cacao, unrefined organic coconut sugar and organic fair-trade cocoa butter. They have several different flavored chocolate bars with different add-ins. Plain cacao or cocoa powder and the sweetener of your choice works great too. Lastly, you could try any of the chocolate collagen powders they have out now. Check the ingredients first though.

Coffee

The most important part of any mocha is, of course, the coffee. I have been searching for the best organic and clean coffees and I have a blog post about my two favorites so far. Check it out here. If these brands don’t interest you, I highly recommend you buy organic coffee at the very least. Coffee is one of the most heavily sprayed crops (with chemical pesticides, fertilizers, etc.) in the world. Some of the residue from these chemicals is burned off during the roasting process, but not all. Even if all the residue was burned off, all those chemicals are still going into the soil and water and affecting the local wildlife. To top it off, the U.S. doesn’t have any set limits for pesticide residue on coffee beans. Yuck! If you see the importance of buying organic produce, you should be buying organic coffee as well. Coffee or Espresso Machine

I’m sure you all have a coffee machine at home, but I have to tell you about my favorites. We try to avoid coffee makers that have plastic that touches hot water/coffee, in order to avoid plastic leaching into the water or coffee. Hands down my favorite espresso machine is the Breville Barista Express, I have had mine for over 6 years and I use it every day! From a former barista with over 10 years experience, I can say- this machine is worth the investment and you don’t have to be a barista to use it.

If an espresso machine is out of your price range or too intimidating for you, no worries. I also highly recommend this Bean Envy pour-over coffee maker, the bottom is glass and the filter is reusable stainless steel. The Chemex pour-over coffee maker is a great option, just make sure the filters you use are unbleached. Lastly, the good ol’ French press. Look for ones without plastic that the hot liquid would come into contact with, like this Mueller French Press. When it comes to heating the water for the pour-over method or French press, I love my Cosori Electric Gooseneck Kettle.
