Sharing is caring!

*This is my updated list from February 2021, I will continue to update this list as I find new products. Check back for updates or join my email list for my most recent favorite non-toxic product swaps.*

Knowing where to start when it comes to switching to a less toxic lifestyle can be completely overwhelming. That is why I created this list of non-toxic product swaps, as a stepping stone for anyone who needs help. I have spent several years researching and testing different products. It is my goal to find clean, good quality, yet cost effective non-toxic product swaps for myself and others. Below are some of my favorite non-toxic household products so far. Let me know if you need help finding a good non-toxic product swap! If you haven’t read my post about why you should make these non-toxic product swaps, check it out here.

Shampoo & Conditioner-

I am loving the Acure Buildup Balancing Hemp & Apple Cider Vinegar Shampoo and Acure Buildup Balancing Hemp & Apple Cider Vinegar Conditioner. They are both fragrance free, mineral oil free, sulfate, paraben free, formaldehyde free and petrolatum free. My newest favorite shampoo and conditioner is Evolvh UltraShine. It foams up really well, so you use less of it. It smells amazing and it leaves my hair feeling really clean. Evolvh has tons of great hair products. Check them all out here.

Body Wash

Non-toxic bar soap is great because it produces way less waste than plastic bottles of body wash. Dr. Bronner’s is a great brand and their Pure Castile Bar Soaps are packaged in recycled paper. I personally don’t like using bar soap though, so I like Andalou Naturals CannaCell Shower Gel. However, my newest favorite is Alaffia Body Wash, specifically the vanilla mint scent.

Razor-

My new favorite razor is Lisse safety razor. Read all about it and get a discount code here.

Toothpaste-

Hello Oral Care Fluoride Free Antiplaque & Whitening Toothpaste is my toothpaste pick. I like the peppermint flavor, it foams up nicely and leaves my mouth feeling clean and fresh. I also like their Activated Charcoal Teeth Whitening toothpaste. However, charcoal toothpastes are abrasive, so I only use it once or twice a month to help keep my teeth white. Also, I just found these toothpaste tablets that Hello has now. They come in a eco-friendly metal tin, so no plastic! I absolutely love them, both the peppermint and the charcoal have the tablets. This brand has tons of other products including kids toothpaste, mouthwash, toothbrushes, floss and deodorant, check out their products here.

Face Wash

Acure Resurfacing Glycolic + Unicorn Root Cleanser is one of my favorites when it comes to affordability. I’ll be honest, the sparkly packaging totally got me on this face wash. I love it though, it smells like rose, is creamy, but lathers nicely and leaves your face feeling clean. It has true unicorn root (aletris farinosa is the scientific name) which has estrogen-like properties and can help counteract the loss of estrogen in the skin which leads to aging skin.

Years ago, I tried an oil cleanser for the first time and was not a fan. Finally, I gave it another try recently when I got some Pai Rosehip Fruit Extract Cleansing Oil in my Detox Market Detox Box and my mind has officially been changed. I use it to take off my make up at night. Just spread it over my dry face, then get my make up removing towel wet with warm water and wash the cleansing oil and make up off. I’ve also just tried Primally Pure’s Cleansing Oil and the simple ingredients in this one are great!

Face Moisturizer

This Andalou Naturals Ultra Sheer Daily Defense Facial Lotion SPF 18 is my favorite moisturizer I have tried so far. It is light, has a citrusy scent, doesn’t leave my face feeling greasy and it has SPF 18 in it. It’s not the best protection if you are going to be out in the sun a lot, but it is a great everyday moisturizer! See the sunscreen below for a good moisturizing face sunscreen.

Sunscreen

My favorite sunscreen is All Good Mineral Sunscreen. It’s so hard to find a non-toxic mineral sunscreen that rubs in and doesn’t leave you looking white. I’ve tried several brands during my search and All Good is the only one that rubs in easily and doesn’t leave a white residue. Our whole family uses it. There are no chemical UV absorbers, parabens, oxybenzone, synthetic fragrances, gluten or GMOs. It is vegan, biodegradable, reef friendly, water resistant and 3rd party tested. All Good has deodorant, hand sanitizer, moisturizer, lip balm and more. Check out all their products here.

Looking for a face sunscreen? My favorite so far is Suntegrity 5-in-1 Tinted Moisturizing Face Sunscreen. Suntegrity uses zinc oxide to protect your skin from sun damage and hyaluronic acid, red algae and astaxanthin to lock in moisture. Want to try it first? You can order 3 samples of most products on the Detox Market site for only $7.99. Just click “sample it” on the product page. Get it here.

Deodorant

When I first started using Native Deodorant 4 years ago, it was not a household name. Now you can find Native in grocery stores, drug stores and Target! When I first started using this deodorant, we were on a trip to Hawaii, it worked so well. I could not believe that a natural deodorant could work so well! I didn’t stink and I didn’t even sweat as much as I usually do. Since having my daughter, it doesn’t work as well for me, but I still highly recommend everyone try it! I suggest doing an armpit detox for about a week when you first start using it if you aren’t already using a natural deodorant.

My newest deodorant obsession is Primally Pure’s blue tansy deodorant. Most of the ingredients are fair trade and/or organic. The best part of all… it actually works! I hardly ever stink anymore! Primally Pure is one of my new favorite companies, check out all their products here.

Hand Soap

I use Puracy Hand Soap, they use ‘natural fragrance’, which I don’t love seeing on a label. However, their natural fragrance is a ‘combination of naturally derived essential oils, floral extract, and plant-based aroma-producing ingredients‘. They don’t use any harmful synthetic perfumes or phthalates. I love that you can buy it in a big 64oz bag, that way you can avoid using too much plastic. I also like Seventh Generation Free & Clear Hand Soap, it is a close second.

Laundry Detergent

If you are just making the switch to cleaner laundry detergents, I highly recommend Grab Green. The scented Grab Green detergents aren’t the ‘cleanest’ when it comes to ingredients because they do add a synthetic blend to make the scent last longer. However, their products are made without phosphates, phthalates, chlorine, animal by-products, toxins, dyes or masking agents, so I am comfortable using this brand. It is perfect if you are used to that strong smell of conventional detergents and aren’t ready to lose the scent. The unscented is the safer option though, if you are sensitive to fragrance.

Branch Basics is also awesome, I have been using their oxygen booster in my white loads for over a year and I love how white my whites have stayed! Their detergent concentrate lasts up to 192 loads. Branch Basics is fragrance free, plant and mineral based, biodegradable, with no harmful preservatives. I also LOVE their cleaner, see below. Check out all their products here.

Molly’s Suds is a well known and trusted brand of laundry detergent. I just started using it and so far, I really like it! Molly’s Suds contains no synthetic fragrances or dyes, formaldehyde, petrochemicals, phosphates, optical brighteners or nonylphenol ethoxylates. They have a variety of scents, check out all their products here.

Fabric Softener

I don’t use fabric softener anymore, I don’t feel like it is necessary. A great non-toxic alternative I would use though is white vinegar!

Dryer Sheets

Switch to wool dryer balls, dryer sheets are extremely toxic. Dryers balls help cut down on static and they help your clothes dry faster, not to mention they are non-toxic. You can add drops of essential oils to them if you want to add some scent. I suggest adding the oils to the dryer balls at the end of the cycle, the scent is stronger that way.

Laundry Stain Remover

Puracy Natural Stain Remover is amazing! I have tried numerous non-toxic stain removers and it has taken a couple years to finally find one that really works. Puracy uses six plant enzymes to eliminate even the toughest stains, like tomato sauce on white fabric (just had to do that today)! It is eco-friendly, plant based, cruelty free and vegan. Click here to get it on Amazon. Or here to get it on the Puracy website. Use code JENNH10 for 10% off your order.

Dish Soap

My pick for dish soap is Earth Friendly Products Dishmate. I like the Free & Clear, but the lavender is also a good choice. The other scents aren’t quite as clean, but are still a better option than something like Dawn.

Dishwasher Detergent

I’ve been using Ecover Automatic Dishwasher Tablets recently, but I’ve also used Seventh Generation. Both are good, clean choices I would recommend.

Dish Rinse Aid

I personally like to use white vinegar or my Thieves Household Cleaner concentrate and water as a rinse aid.

Multi-Purpose Cleaner

I’ve recommended Branch Basics before, they are definitely one of my favorite non-toxic household cleaners. It works well, there’s no scent and no toxic ingredients! Another cleaner I love is Young Living Thieves Household Cleaner, it smells amazing and is made with essential oils. I could go on and on about how much I love Thieves, but I’ll save that for another time! I use my Thieves concentrate to make an all purpose cleaner, bathroom cleaner and toilet bowl cleaner. These amber glass spray bottles are great for making different Thieves cleaners in.

My newest favorite non-toxic cleaner is Force of Nature. Force of Nature combines water, salt, vinegar and electricity into an EPA registered sanitizing and disinfecting spray cleaner. Click here to learn more.

Toilet Bowl Cleaner

I have made Thieves powdered fizzy toilet bowl cleaner before, it smells great! I just ran out though, so now I just spray my Thieves bathroom cleaner in the toilet. If you are looking for a store bought toilet bowl cleaner though, I recommend Seventh Generation.

These are all products that I have or would use. I won’t recommend anything unless I have looked into it and approve of it. Like I have said before, I don’t recommend being wasteful and throwing away products if there is still some left. So when you use up your products, replace them with these or other safer products. Stay tuned for more non-toxic product swaps including green beauty products.
