Disposable razors and razor cartridges are great, but have you ever thought about all the unnecessary plastic waste you are creating by using them? What is a Safety Razor
The safety razor came on the scene in the late 1800’s, making it possible for men (women didn’t start shaving until around 1915) to shave at home rather than having to go to a barber. A safety razor is a single, double sided razor blade protected by metal to help reduce the risk of cuts. Once disposable razors came on the market in 1974, people kind of forgot about safety razors. However, they are making a come back! Our society is realizing how much unnecessary waste disposable razors produce and we are looking for better, more sustainable options.
Why You Should Switch to a Safety Razor
The safety razor can appear dated and antique when compared to the new 5 blade disposable/disposable cartridge razors. When you really weigh out the pros and cons though, the safety razor wins by a landslide. More seems better when it comes to the amount of blades on a razor, right? Wrong! Disposable razors usually have 2-5 semi-dull blades that can cause irritation to the skin by tugging at the hair and causing razor burn. It is also easy for dirt, moisture and hair to get stuck between those blades, creating a breeding ground for bacteria. The single blade on a safety razor is sharp and makes a clean cut the first time. It is also easy to take apart and clean, reducing the chance of bacteria growth.
On average, with a disposable razor/disposable cartridge razor, you should be replacing it after every 5-10 shaves. Considering how expensive those cartridges are, I know people are not doing that. When I used a Venus razor, I was guilty of going at least 6 months before replacing the cartridge because of how damn expensive those things are! With safety razors, Lisse in particular, you should be changing the blade about every 7-10 shaves. More often if your hair is course. The difference is that the replacement blades for safety razors are about $0.10 each, compared to several dollars for each cartridge or disposable razor. So while it is more expensive up front for a safety razor, in the long run it will be cheaper because the blades are so cheap. Did I mention you can recycle the blades? Just save up all your blades in a jar with a a lid, when the jar is full take it to a local facility the recycles sharps or metals!

I’ll be honest, I was a little nervous about using a safety razor when I first tried Lisse, but I am now completely convinced safety razors are far more superior than disposable razors! How to Use the Lisse Safety Razor
First of all, you want to hold this razor at a 30 degree angle and go slow, especially at first. Use short strokes and don’t apply too much pressure, let the weight of the razor be the pressure. Make sure to use plenty of soap, I love the peppermint and koalin clay soap from Lisse (get yours here), but any soap will do. Rinse the razor well after each use and keep in a dry-ish place. Basically, just keep it out of running or standing water. Replace the stainless steel blade every 7-10 shaves or when you feel a slight drag sensation, that means your aren’t getting a close shave. When you replace the blade, do not throw the blade in the trash or recycle! Store your used blades in a jar (like I mentioned above). When the jar is full take it to your local metal or sharps recycling facility. To replace the blade, just unscrew the handle. Make sure you put it back together properly, see the picture below.
